I occasionally make earlier crossbows such as Roman and pictish crossbows. Though it is highly likely that the crossbow survived to some degree after the fall of the western roman empire in areas such as France and Spain, we know frustratingly little about them. However it is certain that these maintained the style of their roman predecessors as styles that appear in the 10th and 11th century display several key styles of 4th and 5th century, implying a continuous manufacturing of crossbows in Europe between these times.
